HONORS ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
Santa Susana High – Mrs. Aiello
This course is only offered every other year.
Please join us in August 2012.
Pre-requisites and/or co-requisites:
A grade of “B” or better in CP Biology and in CP Chemistry, or teacher approval.
NOTE:
On the first day of classes you must bring proof of eligibility for enrollment into this class.
Please bring the following:
A copy of your high school transcript which shows completion of all prerequisite classes
OR
A copy of your report cards which show your prerequisite classes.
Course Overview:
This course is a detailed study of the structures and functions of the human body. Various materials, apparatus, and dissections of assorted specimens are used to provide laboratory experiences in this area. This course is primarily designed for people with specific interest in entering the medical and health professions. Students will be required to complete a PowerPoint presentation of physiology for the first semester, a presentation of practical anatomy for the second semester, and a term independent research paper.
Course Objectives:
The focus of this course is to have the students gain knowledge and apply the concepts of human anatomy and physiology.
Lab Requirements:
All students will participate in the laboratory dissections of assorted specimens and the cat. Laboratory dissections and exercises will be done in groups of two or three students. Each group will be assigned their own specimens for dissection and a set of dissection instruments. The members of the lab group are wholly responsible for the security of their specimens and dissection instruments. The lab group will replace lost or damaged instruments. Each lab group will be required to present one class dissection demonstration during the second semester. Each group member will be required to participate in the class demonstration.
Grading:
Grades are earned by the student based upon tests, quizzes, labs, lab practicums, an independent research paper, PowerPoint presentation, and a practical anatomy presentation. The scale is as follows:
90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, Below 60% = Fail
Make Up Work:
Late work will not be accepted (except for excused absences only). Students are responsible for obtaining missed assignments before or after class, or after school. All make-up work is due within the number of days absent. All tests and quizzes must be made up with in one week (please note: the format of Make-Up Exams will be rigorous). Due to the extensive set-up required for dissection exams, these can not be made up.
Student Expectations:
Students should expect to spend at least 1-2 hours a day (7 days a week) on reading and studying for Honors Anatomy & Physiology. In addition to identification of anatomical structures, students must be able to explain and apply physiological functions of tissues, organs, and organ systems. Preparation for presentations and research paper is also expected to be completed outside of class.
Students enrolled in Honors Anatomy & Physiology will be expected to have read and reviewed
Chapters 2 & 3 in Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology by Martini.
The following completed assignment for summer study is due the first day of class:
An EXAM on both chapters will be given AT THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK of the new fall semester.
*Can be checked out from the SSHS Library after school or at lunch during finals week in June.
Recommended purchase: Pictorial Anatomy of the Cat by Gilbert This can be purchased on line.
